Atelierul de Grafica
Huge churches, more opulent than ever before, have just been or are to be raised in many Romanian towns. Hundreds of arcades, big gold-polished crosses over the copper towers defy any common-sense and Christian humility. Their architecture and paintings seem to have nothing to do with God. (Hunedoara, Deva, Fagaras, Arad etc.)
Meanwhile the patrimony churches collapse. An irreversible process for most of them; they fall back into the earth they have been built of. (Almasul Mic, Tomnatecul de jos - Hunedoara county). There are no restorers, no money, no visibility during election campaigns, maybe.. no will for sure.
The exhibition Project 60 Wooden Churches - Gorj, Valcea, Hunedoara, Sibiu is the result of a first stage of work - the covering of some of the churches with a tarpaulin has been accomplished, to at least protect them from the coming rains. Tired, sad and outraged after weeks of work, the authors filled-up the hall. Their efforts to bandage some wounds or dying bodies make any clumsiness pardonable. Even the lack of a catalogue at the opening.
Opening Monday, September 14th, 19h. Open until September 25th.
